What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is a condition where your eyes cannot produce enough tears or your tears are poor quality. It can lead to a variety of uncomfortable symptoms, including:

  • Dryness
  • Itchiness
  • Grittiness
  • Redness
  • Light sensitivity
  • Blurred vision

Our team will work with you to develop a personalized dry eye treatment plan tailored to the underlying cause of your condition.

Helping You Understand Dry Eye

Dry eyes can be triggered when you don’t have enough tears or your tears evaporate too quickly. Your tear film has 3 layers–if the glands that produce different parts of your tears aren’t functioning correctly or become inflamed, your eyes can feel dry.

The causes of dry eye can vary, but some common culprits include:

  • Environmental factors like dry environment, indoor air currents, outdoor wind, air-bourne allergens, and smoke exposure
  • Age-related tear production decline due to tear gland atrophy and changes in eyelid glands, skin, lashes and musculature
  • Underlying medical conditions like allergies, autoimmune diseases, hormonal changes, and/or the side effects of certain medications

Conditions like meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) can also cause dry eyes.

MGD & Dry Eye

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a chronic and progressive condition affecting the function of the tiny meibomian glands that line your eyelids. These glands produce your tear film’s oily layer, which is essential for stopping your tears from evaporating too quickly.

MGD symptoms can include:

  • Fluctuating or blurry vision
  • Watery eyes
  • Discomfort wearing contact lenses or eye makeup

We offer treatments like IPL (intense pulsed light) therapy that can address MGD by gently stimulating your meibomian glands, helping release the oils your eyes need for optimal function.

DIAGNOSING THE CAUSES OF DRY EYE

Addressing your dry eye needs starts with a comprehensive eye exam and then more specific, comprehensive dry eye testing. We take an education-based personalized approach to dry eye treatment, tailoring our recommendations to your unique needs and the underlying cause of your symptoms.

Some of the diagnostic steps we take include:

  • Meibography: This diagnostic technique captures detailed images of your meibomian glands that help us assess the health status and quantity of the glands.
  • Dyes & Staining: We can use special dyes to add colour to the tear film, assess the quantity and quality of the tear film, and stage the degree of dry eye and ocular surface disease.
  • Automated & Subjective Tear Breakup Time (TBUT) Testing: This test measures your tear film breakup time, indicating how long your tears stay on your eyes before evaporating.

Our Dry Eye Treatments

Dry eye can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or race. However, certain factors can increase your risk of developing this condition, including:

We consider all of these factors when considering your treatment options, offering a tailored solution unique to you.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy

IPL therapy is an innovative treatment that uses targeted light pulses to reduce inflammation in the eyelids and improve meibomian gland function.

By reducing inflammation, IPL can help your glands produce a healthier oil for your tears, stabilizing the tear film and preventing dryness.

Cynosure TempSure radiofrequency is a technology that gently heats the eyelids to liquify the oils & fats in the glands, and improve meibomian gland function and reduce inflammation. Similar to IPL, TempSure can help your glands function more effectively, leading to improved tear quality and reduced dry eye symptoms.

ZEST is an in-office treatment that uses plant-based extracts to kill Demodex mites that can infest the eyelids as well ass the bases of the lashes—a common issue for older adults.

The treatment involves a gentle yet thorough cleaning of the lids and lashes, killing and removing the mites and their byproducts. The treatment can help reduce redness around the margins of the eyelid, supporting a healthier tear film and reducing the look of irritated eyes.

Blepharitis, an inflammation of the eyelids, can contribute to dry eye. We offer a variety of treatments to manage blepharitis, including lid scrubs, medications, and in-office procedures like eyelid debridement.

Lid scrubs with specially formulated cleansers help remove debris, bacteria, and mites that can clog glands and worsen inflammation, while medications like antibiotics can further reduce inflammation and manage bacterial contributions.

In some cases, eyelid debridement may be necessary to manually remove stubborn blockages and improve gland function.

Meibomian gland expression helps us clear blocked meibomian glands, improving the flow of oil into your tears.

During meibomian gland expression, our team will use a specialized tool or a paddle to apply gentle pressure along the eyelid margins. The pressure can help clear any blockages within the glands and address meibomian gland dysfunction.

Other Treatments We Offer

Along with a wide range of in-office treatments, we also offer different at-home treatment options, including:

  • Medicated Eye Drops: We offer a variety of prescription and over-the-counter eye drops to help increase tear production, soothe irritation, and reduce inflammation.
  • Omega-3 Supplements: Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for healthy tear production. We may recommend incorporating omega-3 supplements into your daily routine.
  • Eyelid Sprays & Masks: Warm compresses and eyelid sprays can help loosen blockages in the meibomian glands, which produce the oily layer of your tears.
